{"id":5,"date":"2011-09-28T10:08:04","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T10:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2012-08-20T15:34:19","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T15:34:19","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/home\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ZimLA Preamble\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Zimbabwe Library Association brings together information\u00a0 professionals from all types and forms of libraries, documentation centres, records centres, archival and information service providers in Zimbabwe.\u00a0 The major thrust of the National Association is to foster cooperation among and between Information Practitioners, Academics and other interest persons in the sector to \u00a0enhance professional development in state-of-the-art and good practices in the LIS profession and offer staff training programmes to equip professionals with new skills to re-tool and to improve existing skills and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Zimbabwe Library Association (ZimLA) is the professional association<a href=\"http:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/files\/2011\/09\/zimla-logo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110 alignleft\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/files\/2011\/09\/zimla-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/files\/2011\/09\/zimla-logo.png 156w, https:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/files\/2011\/09\/zimla-logo-110x101.png 110w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/><\/a> of the nation&#8217;s librarians.\u00a0\u00a0We also play an instrumentatl role of advocating for\u00a0providing adequate school libraries and librarians for the country. Most schools in Zimbabwe have only a classroom library, i.e. some shelves with supplemental materials. Fewer than 50 schools in the country have proper librarians, and they are mostly private schools. Please join us in working with the Ministry of Education on a policy of . . .<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cOne school, one library, one librarian\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_0002-e1310249263808.jpg\" alt=\"Gweru parade\" width=\"570\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of ZimLA&#8217;s activities are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>promoting October as International School Library Month.<\/li>\n<li>promoting general reading in schools.\u00a0 ZimLA wants to move away from just textbooks to more reading.<\/li>\n<li>encouraging librarians in training. In Zimbabwe, there are library training schools at Harare Polytechnic and NUST in Bulawayo.<\/li>\n<li>running workshops for \u201cteacher-librarians\u201d\u00a0 (usually English teachers drafted to operate a school library) in Binga and Gokwe.<\/li>\n<li>working with partners like the National Library and Documentation Service (established by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/wipolex\/en\/details.jsp?id=8875\">National Library and Documentation Service Act<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>publishing <a href=\"http:\/\/zimbabwereads.org\/zimla\/zimla-news\/\">ZIMLA News<\/a>, now available online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current officers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Chairperson: T.G.
